Dar es Salaam or Mombasa: Which Port Serves Rwanda?

Comparing the Central and Northern Corridors for cargo to Kigali.

Megira Transport & Logistics · Updated 2026-10-19

Most sea cargo for Rwanda arrives through one of two Indian Ocean ports: Dar es Salaam in Tanzania or Mombasa in Kenya. Both connect to Kigali by road. Here is how they compare, and how to choose.

Dar es Salaam — the Central Corridor

From Dar es Salaam, trucks travel west across Tanzania and enter Rwanda at the Rusumo one-stop border post. The road route crosses one international border on the way to Kigali.

Mombasa — the Northern Corridor

From Mombasa, the Northern Corridor runs through Kenya and Uganda, usually crossing into Uganda at Malaba or Busia and into Rwanda at Gatuna/Katuna. Some shipments are instead routed through Tanzania via Holili and Rusumo.

How to choose

  • Your shipping line and origin: which port your carrier serves, and how often, often decides it.
  • Cargo type: oversized, heavy or sensitive cargo may suit one route's roads and handling better.
  • Documents and transit: each route has its own transit procedures and border formalities.
  • Timing: port congestion and border conditions change — the better port can differ from one month to the next.
  • Final destination: deliveries beyond Kigali (for example to Burundi or eastern DRC) may favour one route.

There is no single right answer for every shipment. Megira recommends the port per shipment when we quote, based on the carrier, cargo and delivery date. See both corridors on our transport routes map, or request a quote and we'll advise.
